A while back I stopped at a used bookstore during my lunch break to kill some time, and I walked into the store and tucked away in the corner was a shelf of old Bibles. I began to thumb through some of the Bibles, looking at the names written on the presentation pages, when this one particular Bible caught my eye. I reached over and pulled it off the shelf and opened up to 1 Kings chapter 20. There was no reason why I turned to 1 Kings it was just where I happened to turn. However on this particular page it had looked as if someone had spilled coffee or tea on it, and it had formed a stain. You say, what is so great about a stain in a bible? Well the stain that had created a perfect shape of a heart. I thought about this Bible with a stained heart and Psalm 119:11 came to mind: "Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee"(Ps. 119:11).
It is sin that stains our heart, but it is God's word which keeps us from sin. If it is God’s word that keeps us from sin, then it is also sin that keeps us from God’s word. Why did David say "Thy word I have hid in my heart"? Why did he use the word "hid"? The word "hid" used here in the Hebrew language can mean to store up treasures. Jesus spoke about treasures in Matthew 6:21 he said "For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also." David’s heart was in God’s word because he treasured God's word. David said in Psalm 119:127, "I love thy commandments above gold; yea, above fine gold." David further states in Psalm 119:162, "I rejoice at thy word, as one that findeth great spoil." And once more in Psalm 19:10 speaking about God’s commandments David wrote, "More to be desired [are they] than gold, yea, than much fine gold: sweeter also than honey and the honeycomb." When we feel our lives beginning to slip more and more into sin, it’s probably because we are slipping more and more away from God’s word. It is very easy to get to a place where we are no longer hiding God’s word in our hearts, but much like Adam and Eve we soon find ourselves hiding from God. "The Bible will keep you from sin, or sin will keep you from the Bible." Dwight L. Moody
